Indictment Unveils Alleged Scheme of Extortion, Gifts, and Lavish Spending
Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, have been indicted on charges of corruption, including bribery, extortion, and conspiracy. The indictment alleges that the couple accepted bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, and other lavish gifts from Salomon Melgen, a wealthy eye doctor and political donor. In exchange, prosecutors allege that Menendez used his position as a senator to provide favors to Melgen, such as lobbying for his business interests and intervening on his behalf in a Medicare fraud investigation.
Arslanian, a former television producer, is accused of being a co-conspirator in the alleged scheme.
