American Civil War

1861-1865

A Conflict that Divided a Nation

The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was a pivotal conflict in the history of the United States. Fought over the issues of slavery and states' rights, it pitted the Union (the North) against the Confederacy (the South) from 1861 to 1865.

The war began on April 12, 1861, with the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina. It ended on May 26, 1865, with the surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

The Civil War was one of the bloodiest conflicts in American history, with an estimated 620,000 soldiers killed. It also resulted in the abolition of slavery and the reunification of the United States.
