Gypsy Rose Blanchard: A Tragic Tale of Munchausen by Proxy

The Story

Gypsy-Rose Alcida Blanchard-Anderson, born on July 27, 1991, became a global figure when she was convicted of her mother's murder in 2015. Her story is a complex and disturbing one, involving a childhood marked by alleged Munchausen by Proxy, a psychiatric disorder in which a caregiver intentionally fabricates or induces illness in a child for attention or sympathy.

The Crime

Gypsy Blanchard planned the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, along with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, in June 2015. The murder was carried out by Godejohn, and Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in the conspiracy.

The Aftermath

The case has drawn widespread attention and raised questions about the diagnosis and treatment of Munchausen by Proxy. It has also sparked a debate about the ethics of online fundraising for medical expenses, as Blanchard's mother had been soliciting donations under the pretense that her daughter was severely ill.
